So you're ready to start working out again. Good for you sis. There's nothing wrong with wanting to start the year off healthy. Problem is your not really feeling the whole gym experience. That's okay.
Staying healthy, losing weight, or gaining muscle are fitness goals for all of us whether you are plus size or not. But sometimes working out at a gym can be intimidating. It doesn't matter if your reasons are because you don't want others to fat shame you or if you have insecurities of your own. I know the feeling.
I once participated in a community-based program at a well known gym for women where I studied to be a personal trainer and exercise instructor but was not chosen because I didn't have the typical personal trainer look. Are you serious?
Anywho,
Whatever the case, if you are feeling like the gym life is not for you, I have a few alternatives to workout gyms that will help you reach your healthy lifestyle goals.
Go for a walk
If the weather is nice enough this is a great idea because the fresh air will make you feel so good. If it's too cold outside, head to your favorite mall.

Watch YouTube Videos
This is personally one of my favorite way to workout because I don't have to worry about looking silly and I have tons of fun.

Buy Workout DVDs
Listen, exercising to a workout DVD or BlueRay still works. I actually lost all of my baby weight which was over 60 pounds doing this after I had my son. It works y'all! If you don't know which exercise DVD to buy, you can borrow them from your local library and give them a test run.

Dance
Turn on your favorite playlist and jam to the beat for at least 30 minutes. Dancing is a great form of aerobic activity that gets your heart pumping. You can also take a hip hop, salsa, or steppers class to learn something new. Another idea is to add dance to your housework and take dance breaks while you clean.
Take a Class
Grab your friends or go solo to a community or church Zumba class. You'll find that the atmosphere is more supportive in these type of environments.
Play With the Kids
Go to an indoor park and play with the kids if it's not nice enough to go outside. Next time the kids want to go to the basketball gym go with them and shoot some hoops.
Use Your Apartment Workout Room
Does your apartment building have a workout room? Girl, you better use it! We all know that the amenities of having a workout room were one of the reasons you bought that apartment in the first place, am I right? Just pick a time that no one is around.
Better yet, purchase an exercise bike or treadmill and sweat out in the comforts of your own home.
Hire a Personal Trainer
If you have the money, ask around and see if your local personal trainer does house calls. It doesn't hurt to ask. Just make sure it's someone you can trust.
Where do you like to workout? Is the gym your thing or would you rather workout at home?
I needed this because I hate the gym. I can eat right but that gym is a no for me. I walk in my neighborhood when it gets warm but that's about it.
ReplyDeleteI work out at home. I run up and down the stairs, jump and jacks, push ups. I need to lose about 15 more lbs and I am not interested in going to the gym. As soon as the weather breaks I will be outside running and walking
