Well, last weekend showed me that the Twin Cities are now on the map! We had not one, but two women of color expos. The Shades of Beauty Expo and The Twin Cities Natural Hair Expo. I'm going to do my best to share what I learned, this may get long so stay with me.
Shades of Beauty Expo
On Saturday, my daughter and I headed to St. Paul, MN for the Shades of Beauty Expo held at the Excel Center. It was really encouraging to see sisters embracing their beauty.
We watched a fashion show that featured women of all sizes and shapes and learned how to dress for our body type.
The Hair Whisperer shared her Texture Talk. She broke down how to determine your hair type and take care of your curls.
Latoya Bell of Brilliant Chic was the presenter of the Curvy Girl's Style Guide fashion show.
Go Latoya!
The Shades of Beauty Expo was excellent! We really enjoyed all the teaching that came forth and were able to learn quite a bit. The venue was very spacious and well put together. I feel like more women should have been there.
The Twin Cities Natural Hair & Beauty Expo
The Twin Cities Natural Hair Expo was lit! My sistahs came from the north, south, east, and west for this event that was all about celebrating women with natural hair.
The venue was jam packed with vendor tables and women of all kinds. There were so many women that at times you couldn't hear the speakers but it was all good. Next year, I'd like to see them get a bigger space so that folks have a little more room. But I loved the upbeat energy of this natural hair expo.
Jaiologie sharing the basic steps on how she takes care of her natural hair using the L.O.C. method.
Me, taking a quick pic with blogger Jaiologie.
Keynote speaker Isis Harmon who is originally from the Twin Cities, shared how far natural hair has really come. Especially in Minnesota!
You know I had to get a picture with Hype Hair's Digital Editor Isis who was giving me Yolanda Adams vibes all day! I had a bomb video of her but I recorded it wrong. If I can fix it, I'll share it.
My favorite part of the expo was the hair and fashion show! Yass!
It was so exciting to see so many women of color rocking their natural hair. It made me proud to be a part of this community.
My lovely daughter and I proudly sporting our natural tresses. We had such a wonderful time and can't wait to see what's in store for next year!
Have you been to any beauty and hair expos in your town?

ReplyDeleteI understand your frustration when events for women of color are not in your city. Although I live in Nashville, there are hardly any events for people of color, especially women. To my surprise we had Dollar general day of beauty last weekend and big name vendors like Shea Moisture, Creme of Nature, Cantu, Pro styles, etc. were present and given out free products. So maybe Nashville has gotten the hint that hey we need events for us too.
It looks like it was a jam packed event. I am so glad you had a great time and learned a lot. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Needing a bigger space for an event like that is a good problem to have. Very cool that these events are much closer to you now. Great photos!
ReplyDeleteYaaasss to the beauty! Hopefully this means more is coming your way and the stuff you learned already will gleefully keep you until another one comes around!
ReplyDeleteThanks in part to social media there are more events heading into the cities around us and for that I too am grateful. #ProductReviewParty
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great event. I always wanted to keep my hair natural but had no support so I ended up with a perm and now I feel it's too late to turn back. I would love to attend something like this in the future:)
ReplyDeleteI've never been to an expo like this before. However, it sounds like they shared a lot of great info.
ReplyDeleteI agree we definitely need an oulet and exposure. I'd love to know of events in December since I'll be in the Twin Cities then.
ReplyDeleteI love events like these, Cleveland is getting better at having more event catered to us!! I love vendor tables that's usually my favorite part of events like these!!!
ReplyDeleteWow what awesome event I would have enjoyed myself. I attended one a few years back in Cleveland and in Fort Wayne tons of fun.
DeleteLooks like a bomb event, love the pics! I haven't really been to any expos in my city, but hope to one day!
ReplyDeleteI have never been to a natural hair expo. Glad that Minnesota is being put on the map. I like the red and black dress during the fashion show. This looks like a great event to attend.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you guys enjoyed. I went to one a few years ago and the venue they selected was too small. I'm clostrophobic so I did not last long
ReplyDeleteYou know what's crazy. Isis was my editor at Hype Hair when I was on their blogger team and I've never seen what she looks like. :D I would have loved the natural hair conference. I'm so glad that you all got to experience this.
ReplyDeleteSince I live in Atlanta I've been to many beauty and hair expos. I'm glad that the expos are coming to your city. They are so much fun, and you learn a lot of new things.
