I big chopped!
And when I say big chopped I mean it! My hair is the shortest it's ever been.
And you know what? I love it!
You see, this is about the fifth time I tried to transition from relaxed to natural hair. There is something about the four-month mark. That's when I get frustrated with the tangles and straight nappy-ness that comes with having two hair textures. I almost always end up relaxing it. Almost.
This time around, I had got to 17 weeks and had already told myself that I would use a kiddie perm this time. Then I considered just applying the relaxer and washing it right out. No...how about cutting it into a pixie cut. Then I can relax my hair after that.
My thought process was all over the place!
I ended thinking that if I was going to cut it, I might as well big chop and see what it looks like. I could always go back to relaxed hair if I hated the way my natural hair looked.
At first, I looked crazy! I cut one side then called my daughter who has been natural for 3 years. I just started cutting my hair where I thought the line of demarcation was. In some spots, I couldn't even tell. I definitely messed up. I'll eventually go to the salon to fix it. I face-timed my daughter so she could see what it looked like.
"Oh my gosh mom!". My husband? He's not feeling it.
But you know what? You couldn't tell me nothing. I used some curly hair moisturizer and a little Eco styling gel and was ready to show the world my new natural doo.
My kids are natural so I already have a nice stash of natural hair care products to try out. Plus, I picked up a few here and there the last time I attempted to go natural.
That's what I am most excited about. I get to try out all of the new products out there. When I was 11 with my little afro, there was nothing to use but Blue Magic hair grease and water. Anybody know what I'm talking about?
I'd love for you to follow me on my journey as I try to navigate this whole natural hair thing. And any tips are greatly appreciated!
If you are still relaxed, don't worry. There's no judgment here. It took me over 30 years to come to this decision and so far I love it.
Did you transition or big chop? Are you still relaxed? Do you think you will ever go natural?
Your curls are so beautiful! I've been natural for 7 years protective styling has been my thing and has helped my hair grow so much and super fast. The only thing with me is because I'm always wearing protective styles I never know how to style my curls. Good luck on your hair journey it's a very fun experience.

DeleteCongratulations on your big chop! Your hair is so beautiful! I can never seem to make it past month five. So I am still relaxed/texlaxed.
ReplyDeleteDre, I feel you! I had the same problem but I just went for it.
DeleteFREEDOM. . . Congrats on your big shop. The freedom of wash & wear is a Great thing. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm figuring this whole wash and go thing out still.
DeleteLove it girl! Such pretty curls
ReplyDeleteThanks! That means a lot coming from the queen of curls. ;)
DeleteIsn't that such an amazing feeling? So excited for you! I have long locs and I remember when I first cut all of my hair off about ten yeas ago. It was so liberating!
ReplyDeleteI transitioned for about 1 year before I big chopped. I let my hair grow long and then I cut it again. I've been natural since 2010, so it's been a while and I'll never use relaxers again, especially since I discovered e'tae.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Wishing you all the best for your new transition!
ReplyDeleteGurl you were hiding all those gorgeous curls in there? It looks so healthy. That was a brave move Stacie! Oh I know all about the Blue Magic and water...or sometimes Ultra Sheen and water LOL!! I'm gonna keep following your journey.
ReplyDeleteCongrats, it's cute. I'm a serial big chopper. I've chopped so many times I can't count. I prefer my hair short, shaved short.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy this new journey.
I've been completely natural since 2005 or 2006, can't remember. Lol But I do know it's been a long time since I've had a relaxer. Good for you for making the big chop!! Embrace your natural hair journey. It truly changed my life.
ReplyDeleteThe big chop is such a major and life changing decision! Good luck on your natural hair journey, your curls look good!
ReplyDeleteIt's cute on you. I am team relaxer. I will enjoy the creamy "crack" until the day I die. I do love how you natural girls are rocking your hair though.
ReplyDeleteThe big chop can take you through so many emotions. Your curls are beautiful, and you are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI'm still relaxed. I have considered going natural, but each time I talk myself out of it. Maybe I'll do it one day. You are correct in saying that there is an abundance of natural hair care products. That's encouraging.
ReplyDeleteI attempted to transition, and it was terrible. When I got to 5 months, I just came home from work and cut it all off.
ReplyDeleteI big chopped and felt so free. My husband (who wasn't my husband then) had all types of things to say to me in private, but he supported me nonstop in public. Now, I'm fully natural, and loving it!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your big chop.
ReplyDeleteI did not big chop. I was scared of losing hair but I did a few clippings throughout my transitioning journey...
